Don’t Throw Your Facebook Page in Jail!

Don’t Throw Your Facebook Page in Jail!

Running a Facebook Page Giveaway?

Own a Facebook Page? How many business pages do you see running giveaways that require a like, share, comment, tag a friend to enter?
Did you know this potentially violates the Terms of Service for Facebook Pages?

Running a Facebook Page Giveaway?
Don’t get locked out of your Facebook Page!

This is a daily discussion in several high member count Social Media Management Facebook Groups I am in. Every day there are people and businesses losing access to their Facebook Pages because their giveaway has been flagged by Facebook HQ.

What happens when a page is “flagged”?
A few things: the owner may lose page access for a few days to a few weeks, the page can be deleted entirely without warning, or Facebook may remove the giveaway post with a “This violates Facebook’s Terms of Service and has been removed” message (lucky ducks).

If you want to preserve your brands Facebook page and ensure its longevity, read the Facebook Pages, Groups and Events Terms of Service. Here is the link:

The good news is there are workarounds to gain new followers and exposure as long as the terms are taken into account.

Here are some general rules to follow.

✅ Facebook is not affiliated with promotions or is anyway responsible for giveaways – and entrants need to know.  A simple disclaimer stating the giveaway is no way sponsored, endorsed, administered by or associated with Facebook is fine.

✅ A set of rules and eligibility requirements are required.

⛔️ The entrants cannot be asked to share the giveaway on their personal timeline as a means of entry.

⛔️ Entrants cannot be asked to tag someone as a means of entry.

⛔️ Sharing the giveaway in a message as a means of entry is not permitted.

⛔️ Entrants cannot be asked to ‘like’ a page as a means of entry.

✅ Followers may be asked to ‘like’ or comment on a page’s status update as a means of entry.

✅ Third party apps can be used to gain entries – Rafflecopter.com is a popular choice.

I hope this checklist simplifies a very popular avenue many pages use to gain new followers and engagement. If you are mindful of the Terms of Service and follow these rules, it may make you sleep better at night and provide your page the opportunity to grow organically.

Besides, following the rules is so much easier than restoring a follower count from a removed page.
